Leviathan Drift — descending into the deep

releaseleviathan-driftoceanpsy-dub

NRD-002. The ocean and the cosmos are the same substance.

Leviathan Drift came from a single image: a humpback whale gliding through deep water, its body covered in bioluminescent patterns that pulse like a living mixing desk. Jellyfish drifting around it in a silent procession. Not a carnival — a passage. Slow, ancient, indifferent to the observer.

Every element in the dub has an ocean equivalent. The bass is the whale's heartbeat. The organ is the warm ocean current. The melodica is the diver's breath. Singing bowls become sonar pings. The sitar drone becomes whale song. Granular textures become bioluminescent plankton. Spring reverb crashes trigger bioluminescent flashes. The riddim is the current. The glow is the psychedelia.

The album is a dive and return. Track 1 descends from the surface — sunlight fading from turquoise to indigo to black. The Descent is sub-bass drone, whale song through vast reverb, and sonar pings decaying into metallic delay trails.

Leviathan Drift is the anchor track — massive sub-bass in a slow steppers pattern, guitar skank playing underwater with softened edges, whale song drones harmonising with the organ. When the dub engineer drops the drums, the oceanic psybient layer is revealed. The leviathan passing beneath the riddim.

Jellyfish Procession is the darkest track on the EP. No snare. Distant rimshot every 4 bars in dark reverb. Multiple sustained synth tones enter one by one, each holding a different scale note with slow independent filter modulation — brightening and dimming like creatures pulsing in dark water. The dub engineer strips elements slowly until only the synth tones and sub-bass remain. The jellyfish are not performing. They are simply existing.

The dive reaches bottom at Abyssal Bloom — Phrygian mode, bass notes throbbing like hydrothermal vents, bioluminescent synth textures pulsing irregularly in near-total darkness. Plankton Nebula is the deepest point — where the ocean becomes the cosmos, a massive granular cloud of shimmering tones filling the stereo field like a living nebula of sound.

Then the ascent. Coral Cathedral brings the first major key — Bb Ionian — reverent and meditative. Tentacle Hymn floats in Lydian mode, never resolving, always reaching. Bioluminescent Dub is the wild experimental track where the dub mixing directly controls the psychedelic layer — every spring reverb crash triggers a shimmer burst, every channel cut kills its bioluminescent glow.

The Ancient Eye surfaces in Eb major — the first and only moment the album resolves from minor to major. Darkness to light. Depth to air. The whale song sustains alone for 8 bars. A farewell from the deep.

The key journey: Eb minor through every darkness, resolving to Eb major. The ancient eye has seen you.
